 Hi everyone,

Happy Friday! We have a short week next week and I have just a couple of announcements to share. 

  • Our Book Bowl Competition is on Wednesday. All day we will be challenging every 5th grade class in a one-on-one showdown. The kids have done a great job with their reading in preparation for this competition!
  • Please let me know if you will be leaving for spring break early or returning late. A few kids have told me, but it's helpful if I have it in email from parents. This is especially important so I can prepare balanced teams for Book Bowl. 
  • We'll finish up the Reading MAP test on Monday next week. Then we're done with MAP for the year! After spring break we'll take a week off and then begin MSTEP. 5th grade must complete all subjects: reading, math, science, and social studies. We're planning on one test per week, always on Tuesday. 
  • The kids have been enjoying our newest read aloud The Hobbit. We'll start our final reading unit on Fantasy shortly after spring break and this is a great way to kick it off. 
    • I'd really like to show the movie version of The Fellowship of the Ring down the line this year. However, it's a PG-13 movie, so I will need signed permission slips ahead of time. As a 90's baby, these films were HUGE for me and I think it would inspire the kids to check out the series of books. Take a look at the Common Sense Media content review and consider whether your child is ready for this movie. The movie is streaming on HBO MAX and available for rental on Amazon, if you'd like to preview it. 
    • Please reach out with questions or concerns, or if you do not approve of your child viewing this. I'll prepare an alternate activity for any students who do not have permission. 
  • It's Spirit Week next week! Take a look at the theme days.

Trail Map 8/24

 Hi Everyone, We had a great first week of school! We spent a lot of time this week getting to know your kids and learning about how we do things here at Central Woodlands. We're geared up for an amazing year of learning as Trailblazers! Read on for this week's announcements. Next week we will begin running our regular schedule and start the first unit of every subject. Here is our weekly schedule . This is subject to change (and likely will change!) as we figure out what works and what does not work.  Next week we will start sending home a daily planner, likely beginning on Tuesday or Wednesday. We're asking students to get parent signatures every night for the first quarter. If we feel it is no longer needed, we'll stop requiring signatures after that (you are, of course, welcome to continue this expectation with your own child). 5th Grade Update

 It's Halloween week! 👻Today we reminded students to carry their costumes in their bags to school tomorrow if they'd like to wear one. We will change into them later in the afternoon, and they will need to be independent with their changing. Please no elaborate or gory make up or play weapons. We have some fun activities planned and a treat at the end of the day!🎃 Thank you to everyone for coming to conferences last week and for partnering in your students' learning.
